September 17, 2001Hello to all, The alert level on everyone's part is extremely high now. Even as I am writing these notes (1:40 PM EDT), five police cars and an ambulance have just converged on my very corner (on the Upper West Side of Manhattan on Broadway in the upper W. 90s), and cordoned off my block. The bomb squad is checking a suitcase that had been left in the trash. It's now ten minutes later, and they're taking down the yellow police scene tape and packing up. Thankfully, it was a hoax or false alarm. But no one here is playing any games as events unfold or is taking anything for granted. When the impossible has already happened, everything becomes possible.
